VIDEO #16-BLACK TURTLE BEANS-GARDEN GIFT BASKET-How to Make

March 17, 2009 · Print This Article

This video demonstrates how to grow black turtle beans, and make a lovely gift basket for Mother’s Day or any gift giving time. My 2009 resollution was not to go to the store, and make everything from the things I have around the house. This beautiful climbing bean, woven over grape vines in a nice ceramic pot, is a beauty, and would be wonderful for someone who loves gardening.

I am loving this garden project. I had no idea that you could grow plants from store bought beans. Wow !!! I miss our bulk stores in Ont. Gotta remember the baggie greenhouse idea…just wish we had sunny windows in this teeny weeny house. OY ! Tks so much !!! Love & look forward to your vids !!!

I grow many of my beans from store beans. I like the 13 bean soap mix, I planted that one year, it was so much fun. Most of those seeds are organic and come form Mexico. They grow super hardy. I have yellow wax bean growing too, and another edible house plant. I use a grow light, spot light to grow my beans indoors. I climb them over my bookshelf, along with the ivy and it’s so much fun and beautiful. Strawberries are going to be ready to eat in 2 weeks. Imagine strawberries on the bookshelf?

I’m shocked by this too! (growing plants from store bought dry beans) It never even occurred to me. I have some black-eyed peas that I might experiment with. Love the seedlings in a bag. Great ideas in this video!

About 3 days ago, we started our herbs with the greenhouse baggies. I have them in the window, but some of them are molding on the soil. :( I went ahead and opened them up all the way to get the air circulating, I baked the dirt and followed your vids as closely as I could, only difference is I have no grow lights (window only) and I didn’t have perilyte, sand, and peat moss. I made a mix of cooked dirt, ashes, and some chopped vegetable fertilizer and the soil is real loose.

You did the right thing, I get mold on top of my dirt sometimes, because of not enough light. It’s normal. The sand helps to keep the soil drained so that it doesn’t keep to moist. Work with what you have, but if you do container gardening, you will need perilite to keep the soil very loose.

If you don’t make compost tea, miracle gro is great. I use it too sometimes.

Yes most seeds are alive from the store. We have become so accoustome to buying seeds in a package. Wow, all the money you save. Now that’s good news.

I love this bean too. I slice them and make green julian black beans sauteeded in butter or olive oil and some garlic too. Yum!!!!

Got something to say?
